Control Systems Forum Program Director

Tansel Yucelen is an Assistant Professor of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Department at the Missouri University of Science and Technology since August 2013. He has also been the Director of the Advanced Systems Research Laboratory (http://www.asrl.us/), where his group is focused on the creation of new information, control, and decision algorithms that reveal advanced systems such has highly capable autonomous vehicles and networked multivehicle systems. These systems are envisioned to elevate our society as well as to perform safety-critical operations with more robots and less humans. His group places a strong emphasis both on theoretic research and experimentation for addressing fundamental and open real-world technological problems with an aim of being recognized as one of the top research laboratories on dynamical systems and controls in the nation by significantly advancing the knowledge and training science-based engineers and professionals to shape the future of our society.

He received the Doctor of Philosophy degree in Aerospace Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta, Georgia, in May 2012, the Master of Science degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, Illinois, in May 2008, and the Bachelor of Science degree in Control Engineering from the Istanbul Technical University, Istanbul, Turkey, in June 2006. Prior to joining the Missouri University of Science and Technology, he held Research Engineer II positions in the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering from February 2013 to August 2013 and the School of Aerospace Engineering from December 2011 to February 2013 both at the Georgia Institute of Technology, where he has also served as a Research Faculty.

His dynamical systems and controls expertise falls into resilient autonomous vehicles and robotics, robust and adaptive control of safety-critical systems, distributed estimation and control of large-scale systems, collective motion and networked multiagent systems, biologically-inspired control and learning, and smart modular systems. In these areas, he has authored or co-authored more than 100 archival journal and conference publications, gave numerous talks, organized invited sessions, courses, and workshops, and performed various technology transitions including AirSTAR of the NASA Langley Research Center. He is the creator of the Control Systems Forum (consys.forum.mst.edu), which is dedicated to the dissemination and discussion of new research results, perspectives, and applications of automatic control, decisions-making, and dynamical systems, and enables individuals from academia, government and industry to follow the state-of-the-art approaches from the experts in control systems at no cost.
